It is Presidents Day, and we are awaiting the breaking news that President Jimmy Carter has passed away at the age of 98. Jimmy Carter personifies the phrase “a life well-lived.” If the devil had gone to Georgia and met Jimmy Carter, Georgia probably wouldn’t be dealing with the election issues they are dealing with right now.
Republicans will remember Carter for two things: hostages and thermostats. Democrats will remember him for the Camp David Accords and decency. Regardless, he had a consequential Presidency.
The seeds of the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis were planted before Carter took over. The CIA engineered a coup ousting the democratically-elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh, and brought back the Shah of Iran. Mosaddegh’s crime was that he wanted to nationalize the oil companies. Eventually, the people rose up, drove the Shah into exile, and took Americans hostages.
Carter was also the victim of the OPEC oil cartel. OPEC drove gas prices a mile high, and gas lines a mile long. He encouraged us to cut back on our energy consumption, and wean ourselves off of Middle Eastern oil. His style was questionable, but his point was right on. We are still dealing with the issue today.
Jimmy Carter’s legacy will be that he made America and the world a better habitat for humanity.
